High potential and gifted education

All NSW public schools have a range of differentiated learning opportunities, enabling students to thrive and reach their potential.

The department is committed to ensuring equitable access to high potential and gifted education for all students, regardless of background or location.

Recognising potential and developing talent

Our teachers find potential and nurture our students to be the best they can be.

Tailored lessons

Each student has different abilities. Teachers respond to each student’s ability by providing extra challenges and extension activities to keep learning exciting and engaging.

Rich opportunities and activities

Students can take part in opportunities to develop their talent in the arts, sport, leadership and more.

Opening doors to wider experiences

Our students can participate in a wide range of opportunities that aim to extend and enrich student potential.

What is high potential and gifted education?

At our school, every learner’s potential is our priority. Many students have high potential, and we help that potential to grow into something powerful. Our teachers find potential and nurture our students to be the best they can be.

Our school has embraced HPGE through a shared lens for recognising potential in students with complex needs.

We do this through:

Our high potential and gifted education opportunities

Our students engage with HPGE education in the classroom, in our school, and in our community.

In our classroom
  • We identify students' learning needs in the classroom and use evidence-informed teaching practices to challenge and extend students. We provide learning pathways, including enrichment and extension programs and acceleration.
  • Our supportive classroom environments promote a sense of belonging and encourage risk-taking, creativity and collaboration.
Across our school
  • Our school recognises that every student is individual, and we provide flexible and diverse opportunities for students to explore and grow their strengths both inside and outside the classroom.
  • Our school offers a range of whole-school programs that support student growth.
  • Our school identifies and supports students with high potential through targeted enrichment, extension and extra-curricular opportunities such as sporting, art, music, drama, STEM and coding opportunities.
Across NSW
  • The Premier’s Sporting Challenge (PSC) promotes whole-school participation in physical activity with leadership pathways and professional learning.
